EMDR – Relief from Emotional Pain

What it is and what it can do

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a non-invasive physical application to the healing of trauma.

Developed over 30 years ago by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., this technique employs elements of different therapies, carefully woven together to achieve relief of emotional pain.

In psychological terms, trauma is used to describe the pain that persists after a given threat has subsided. Trauma essentially consists of a threatening experience that the brain cannot fully process. This results in re-experiencing in the form of nightmares or flashbacks and manifests in other ways like anxiety, depression, “looking over your shoulder,” “jumpiness,” etc. We all know what these things feel like to some degree. And all degrees are worth treating.

How does EMDR help?

We have discovered that application of an alternating side-to-side stimulus (eye movements) combined with attention to the traumatic memory help to eliminate pain (desensitization) and move the memory where nature intended it to reside in your brain (reprocessing).

The coolest part of this is that it happens within minutes, and the effects are permanent! And why is this permanent? Because EMDR is a restoration project.

Born with no agenda

Think of your favorite toddler – what are his/her qualities? Chances are you are thinking of a little person that, among other things, is honest to a fault, has no guile, no hate, and most importantly, NO SHAME. This is how we came into the world and how most of our memories start.

As we grow, life beats a lot of things into us, including shame. EMDR helps restore our minds to a place where we were intended to be all along, without shame.

In other words, EMDR brings us back to nature. But even more than that, we retain the growth and learning, but without the useless pain and suffering!

Who benefits from EMDR?

Now think of the possibilities for you or someone you know. What could life be like? Who benefits from this therapy modality? The answer is basically anyone, including families of those affected. I’ll share with you examples of those with whom I have succeeded.
